HAVERFORD, Pa. (November 19, 2011) – The men's fencing team won all five of their bouts this weekend at the Haverford Invitational. Wins included a 15-12 triumph over Johns Hopkins, which was the program's fifth win against the annual powerhouse.
The 15-12 win was clinched by junior
Michael Pignataro (Commack, N.Y./Commack) who registered the Rangers 14
th and deciding point in the only epee win of the match. Pignataro won six bouts on the day to lead Ranger epeeists.
The Rangers went on to win four more matches, defeating The University of Maryland, 20-7, The University of Virginia 17-10, William & Mary, 21-6 and perennial MACFA power, Haverford, 18-9.
Sophomore
James Weiss (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) led all Ranger fencers, going 14-1 on the afternoon. Weiss and the men's foilists were unstoppable and went unblemished on the day. Junior foilist
Richard Chiu (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) helped lead the charge winning 13 of his 14 bouts during the day.
The Ranger saberists also finished the day unmarked with a 5-0 record. Newcomer
Charlie Dobbins (Durham, N.C./Durham School of the Arts) and junior
Jacob Friedman (Delray Beach, Fla./North Broward Prep) each recorded 10 wins and only one loss.
The Rangers will be back on the strip after the New Year when they travel to the University of Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia Invitational. Schools on the docket included Temple, Johns Hopkins, Duke and Haverford.
