Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 13, 2012) – In a match of unbeatens in Landmark Conference play, the Drew field hockey team came up with a crucial, 4-1 victory over Scranton (9-4, 3-1 Landmark) this afternoon at Ranger Stadium. The Rangers are now 11-2 on the season and remain unblemished in the league at 4-0.
The Rangers top two scorers led the way in the all-important conference matchup. Senior
Sarah Charles (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris), the conference's leading scorer coming into the contest, tallied the game's first two goals, both off passes from junior
Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.).
Drew wasted little time getting on the scoreboard when Charles found the back of the cage just 3:32 into the contest after tipping a long pass from Gagliano. The pair struck again in the 16
th minute when Charles notched her 15
th goal of the year, lifting a short feed from Gagliano into the top left corner of the cage.
Gagliano collected her fourth point of the half on a big strike from just inside the circle on setup from junior
Daneille Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton). The Royals added their only score of the game in the 29
th minute after being awarded a penalty stroke in the 30
th minute.
With the exception of the penalty stroke, the Ranger defense was brilliant. Goalkeeper
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) made 10 saves and allowed the only goal of the game on the stroke.
The only Drew goal of the second half came off the stick of Gagliano in the 67
th minute to essentially seal the Ranger victory. The junior finished the game with two goals and two assists, three points shy of the school-record, nine points.
The Rangers are now tied on top of the Landmark Conference standings with #16 Catholic University who defeated Juniata, 4-3 earlier today. The two square off on October 26
th. Last week's victory over Susquehanna clinched a playoff spot for the Rangers and today's win assured them a seed no lower than third.
The Rangers will go for their 12
th win of the season on Tuesday at home against Montclair St. who ranked fourth in last week's Penn Monto / NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in Ranger Stadium.
