Men’s Fencing Wins Four at Drew Invite

MADISON, N.J. (February 12, 2012) – In the annual Drew Fencing Invitational, the Rangers improved their overall record to 12-10 on the year with four victories in the Simon Forum this afternoon. Drew received a strong effort from both foil and sabre that went 5-1 and 4-2 on the day respectively.

The Rangers started off hot, cruising past Yeshiva, 21-6 and then the United States Military Academy, 18-11. Just before lunch the Rangers suffered their first loss of the day to in-state rival Stevens, 16-11. Drew went on to win their next two bouts over Rutgers and Hunter before being clipped by Cornell, 14-13 in their final match of the day.

Sophomore James Weiss (Somers, N.Y./Somers) and junior Richard Chiu (Boonton, Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) led all Ranger fencers by each collecting 16 wins on the day and only two losses. Weiss improves his season record to 46-8 while Chiu eclipsed a new career high of 38 wins. John Luke Bucuvalas (Conifer, Colo./Conifer) rounded off the solid effort at the foil with a 14-3 record on the afternoon.

In the sabre, freshman Charlie Dobbins (Durham, N.C./Durham School of the Arts) continued his fine rookie campaign, posting a 13-5 record on the day. Senior captain Jacob Hazle-Cary was right behind him, registering 12 wins and six losses.

Men's epee who has struggled of late, picked up two victories in the meet over Rutgers and Hunter College. Junior Michael Pignataro (Commack, N.Y./Commack) posted seven wins on the afternoon help the Rangers to their fourth epee win of the year.

The Rangers will be back on the strip next Sunday for the National Weapon Squad Championships at New York University.
