Box Score MADISON, N.J. (September 5, 2012) – Reigning Landmark Conference Player of the Week, Sarah Charles (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) recorded her first career hat trick as Drew (3-0) defeated Stevens Institute of Technology (1-2) by the score of 4-3 this evening in Ranger Stadium.

Charles scored three first half goals, becoming the first player to record three goals in a game since Kati Eggert scored four against Vassar College back in 2010. Charles wasn't the only player to put forth stellar first half numbers as junior goalkeeper CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) made 11 saves in the first 35 minutes of play. She finished the night with a career-high 18 stops, the most by a Drew goalkeeper since Anne Wallin turned away 22 back in 2005.

The Rangers got on the board just 5:17 into the contest when Charles emerged from a scramble in front of the cage to stick the first goal of the night past Duck netminder, Kaitlin McClymont. Stevens responded by tying the game up at one nearly 13 minutes into the contest on an unassisted goal by Marguerite Chavez.

Drew opened up a two-goal lead in less than two minutes thanks to a pair of scores by Charles. In the 27th minute, Charles fired two shots at the Stevens keeper off a breakaway before finally notching the game's third score. Junior Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) then slipped a pass to Charles in front of the cage to give the Rangers a 3-1 advantage going into halftime.

Gagliano played a big role in the second half, bumping the Drew lead to 4-1 just 1:00 minute into the final frame. The junior received a short pass from freshman Bea Cannavale (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) and blasted it into the back of the cage for her second goal of the season. Cannavale now leads the Landmark Conference with three assists on the season.

The Ducks crawled their way back into the game getting two goals on big hits from Mary Nikish and Megan Traub. The two goals would not be enough, as Carlini and the Ranger defense held tight over the last five minutes of play to preserve the win.

The Drew field hockey team will be back in action on Saturday evening when they take on Muhlenberg at 5:00 p.m. in Ranger Stadium.
