Rangers Go 2-0 at Scarlet Raider Classic

Box Score NEWARK, N.J. (September 9, 2012) – A pair of first half goals and a defensive lock down in the final 45 minutes helped the Rangers cruise to a 2-0 victory over York College (N.Y.) this afternoon. Drew (3-1-1) did not allow a single shot in the final 45 minutes of play.

Junior Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) scored hi s second goal of the fall to put the Rangers up 1-0 just 8:22 into the contest. Gragnano was able to redirect a Philip Mabika (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) cross into the back of the net for the first goal of the game. For Mabika it was his second point in as many games.

Drew opened up a two-score lead just before the half, on a header by senior Mike Jacques (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro). A deep cross off the foot of RJ Voorman (Wycoff, N.J./Ramapo) found the head of Jacques who was waiting on the opposite side of the net. The Rangers unleashed a total of 22 shots compared to just five by the Cardinals on the day.

Sophomore Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) got his second-straight start in net for the Rangers and earned his fourth career shutout.

At the conclusion of the Scarlet Raider Classic, tournament officials honored the strong defensive play of the Rangers. Reyes, Max Dolphin (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) and Nicholas Callari (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater Raritan) were each named to the All-Classic Team. Rutgers-Newark won the 2012 Scarlet Raider Classic based on goal differential after a 4-0 victory over Hunter later in the day.

The Rangers will begin to prepare for the Battle of Madison Ave. on Wednesday night when they take on cross-street rival Fairleigh Dickinson. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Ranger Stadium. Drew has won the previous 25 decisions against the Devils and hasn't allowed a goal in the rivalry since 2005.
