MADISON, N.J. (January 12, 2013) – The Drew University men's and women's fencing teams competed against some of the top teams in NCAA fencing this past Saturday at the Penn State Invitational. The two teams squared off against Haverford, Temple, Columbia, Penn State, the University of North Carolina and Duke.
The men's team fell victim to each of the four schools they faced, Columbia, Duke, Penn State and UNC. Their closest bout of the day came against the University of North Carolina, who emerged with a 16-9 victory. The Rangers also lost to Duke, 25-2, Columbia, 21-6 and host Penn State, 22-5.
The women had a busy day taking on six schools in the annual invitational. Haverford and UNC each pulled out 21-6 victories over the Rangers while Columbia and Temple rattled off 25-2 wins. Temple pulled off a dominate, 26-1 win and Duke pinned a 24-3 setback on the Rangers.
The top individual performances on the men's side came from foilists,
James Weiss (Somers, N.y./Somers) and
John Luke Bucuvalas (Conifer, Colo./Conifer). Weiss posted a 6-2 record on the day and is now 19-5 on the season. In his last meet, he eclipsed the 100-win plateau for his career and is now 107-22 in his time at Drew. Bucuvalas went 6-9 on the day and improved his season record to 16-12.
On the women's side, senior
Emilia Domanowski (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and
Sarah Silvestri (Newfoundland, N.J./West Milford) each won four bouts in the sabre. Silvestri now has a team-best 20 wins on the season.
Both the men and the women will look ahead to the Philadelphia Invitational which is scheduled to take place on January 26
th.
