#16 Field Hockey Downs Moravian, Stay Atop Landmark

MADISON, N.J. (October 12, 2013) – The 16th-ranked Drew University field hockey team shut out Moravian College (8-6, 1-3 Landmark), 4-0 this afternoon in Landmark Conference play. The Rangers improve to 11-1 on the season and 3-0 against conference opponents.

The Drew defense held the Greyhounds to just two shots, both of which were denied by Ranger goalkeeper, CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin). The senior netminder made two saves for her program-record, 40th career win.

The Rangers offense strung together a pair of goals in each half to stay in first place the Landmark Conference.  So far this season, the Rangers have outscored Landmark opponents, 9-2.  Sophomore Sam Barcia (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) collected three points on the day with a goal and an assist. She leads the Landmark Conference with 17 goals and 34 points.

Barcia put the Rangers up 1-0 in the 14th minute when she pushed a shot through the legs of Moravian goalkeeper, Andrea Eck. Drew extended its lead to 2-0 with no time remaining in the first half.  Senior Jess Johnson (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Senior) converted an awarded penalty stroke for her first goal of the season. The successful penalty stroke was the fifth of her career.

The two second half goals by the Rangers were scored less than three minutes apart. Senior Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton) nothched her fifth goal of the season off a pass from Barcia in the 63rd minute. Sophomore Amanday Hearney (Shoreham Wading-River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading-River) rounded off the scoring with her third point in the past two games when she followed up her own rebound just 2:26 later.

The Rangers outshot the Greyhounds, 20-2 and held a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners. Drew has taken the last seven meetings against Moravian and own 19-10-1 edge in the all-time series.

Field hockey will be on the road on Wednesday night to take on the #2-ranked team in the country, Montclair St. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
