Rangers Blank Eagles for Seventh Win

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 2, 2013) – The Drew University men's soccer team pitched a shutout this evening with a 5-0 victory over St. Joseph's College-Long Island (0-10-1) at Ranger Stadium. Sophomore Jackson Hurst (Madison, N.J./Madison) led the Rangers offense with a pair of goals as the Rangers move to 7-2-1 on the season.

Hurst came off the bench to score his first two goals of the season in the first half and that was all the offensive firepower the Rangers needed to secure the non-conference victory. Hurst put the Rangers on the scoreboard in the 38th minute by placing a shot past the outstretched hand of Eagle keeper Avery Gomez. With just five seconds remaining in the first half, he collected a rebound of a Kevin Baroz (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) shot and buried one into the bottom left corner to put the Rangers up 2-0.

The Ranger defense, led by goalkeeper Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran), was impermeable. The Rangers surrendered only eight shots, four in each half, keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard. Reyes needed to make only three saves to earn his third shutout of the season. The victory was his 16th of his career, moving him into 10th place on Drew's all-time wins list.

The Ranger offense tacked on three more goals in the second half of play to secure the third win in four years over the Eagles. Freshmen Dylan Hammer (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury), Joseph Cereste (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearley) and Sebastien Etta Ashu (Newark, N.J./Bard) each notched second half scores in the victory. Hammer scored his fourth goal of the season while Ashu scored his first career goal on the Rangers' final tally of the night.

Drew outshot the Eagles, 21-8 and attempted eight corner kicks compared to just on by St. Joseph's. Drew has won all five meetings with St. Joseph's by the combined score of 29-0.

The Rangers will return to Landmark Conference play on Saturday when they host Susquehanna at home on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
