Second Half Royal Goal Leads to Third Landmark Tie

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 26, 2013) – After taking a 2-1 lead at halftime, the Drew University men's soccer team surrendered a goal in the 55th minute that ultimately led to a 2-2 tie this afternoon with the University of Scranton (9-2-4, 2-2-1 Landmark). The tie moves the Rangers to 9-4-4 on the season and 1-2-3 in the Landmark Conference.

Playing in his final conference home game, senior Ricardo Castro (Mexicali, Mexico/Vincent Memorial) scored and registered an assist to power the Ranger offense. He leads the team with seven goals and is third in the Landmark Conference with 17 points.

Castro got the Rangers offense going in the 26th minute when he sent a cross from the far left side that junior John Nogiewich (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) headed home, putting the Rangers up, 1-0. For Nogiewich, he eclipsed a new career-high with six goals on the year.

The Royals responded less than two minutes later when Kevin Kozic got a good look that was denied by Drew goalkeeper Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) but the rebound was corralled by Michael Bergen in the middle of the box. Bergen ripped a shot at a wide open net to tie the game up at one.

Castro came to the rescue again, this time in the 37th minute. The senior was able to take a deep shot from the right side that the Scranton goalkeeper was unable to hang onto for the second Ranger goal of the game. Drew held the 2-1 lead into the half despite getting outshot, 11-3.

The offense on both sides slowed down over the final 45 minutes of regulation with the only defensive slip up coming in the 55th minute. Michael Romano got a step on the Drew defense at the top of the box, found a seam and was able to beat Reyes to the right corner for the game-tying score.

Reyes made multiple game-saving stops in the contest and finished the game with a season-high eight saves. Royal netminder Eric Hintz made three stops, one in each of the first three periods.

With the Landmark Conference playoff picture still cloudy, the Rangers will play their final league game next Saturday at Juniata. The Rangers will be home for the final time this season on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. against Berkeley.
