Pioneers Advance on Penalty Kicks

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (November 13, 2013) – The Drew University men's soccer team tied William Paterson, 2-2 playing 110 minutes of soccer this evening at Ranger Stadium. The Pioneers advanced to the semfinals of the ECAC Metro Tournament by defeating the Rangers, 3-1 in penalty kicks.

William Paterson (8-8-3) will move on to play Sage in the ECAC Tournament Semifinals. The Rangers end their season with an overall record of 11-4-5.

Two saves by Pioneer goalkeeper Mike Diacheysn and a Drew miss in penalty kicks set the stage for Sean Neal on the fourth William Paterson attempt. Neal sent the Pioneers to the next round beating goalkeeper Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) to the left side of the net. Reyes made an incredible save on the Pioneers third attempt and seven saves in regulation for the Rangers.

William Paterson built a 2-0 lead in the first 27 minutes of the contest. In the 13th minute Pioneer forward Hugh Riley collected a pass from Phil Nigro and beat the goalkeeper to the upper right corner for just inside the box. William Paterson scored another goal in the 27th minute off the foot of Rafael Marques. Nigro recorded his second assist of the game on the Marques goal. The Pioneers 2-0 lead lasted the entire first half despite getting outshot 11-5.

The Rangers started their comeback just 8:35 into the second half when freshman Sebastien Etta Ashu (Newark, N.J./Bard) chased down a long ball played by junior John Nogiewich (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) over the top of defense. Etta Ashu scored his fourth goal of the season by poking it passed the charging goalkeeper.

The Rangers knotted the game up nine minutes later when senior captain RJ Voorman (Wykoff, N.J./Ramapo) scored his second goal of the season. Voorman's goal came off a double assist for senior Ricardo Castro (Mexicali, Mexico/Vincent Memorial) who played a ball to the middle of the field and was chipped forward by Etta Ashu.

Drew dominated the overtime periods out-shooting William Paterson 7-2. The best opportunity for a Ranger victory came in the first overtime period when a shot from Nogiewich rung off the crossbar and was quickly swept away by the Pioneers goalkeeper.

In their 20th ECAC Tournament appearance, the Rangers move to 22-12-3 all-time in the annual postseason event.
