HAVERFORD, Pa. (November 16, 2013) – The Drew University men's fencing team was in action on Saturday competing in the Haverford Invitational. The Ranger Saberists went 3-1 on the day defeating Rutgers, Lafayette and host Haverford.
The Rangers suffered overall losses in all four matches, falling to Rutgers, Lafayette and Cornell by the score of 18-9. The host Haverford came away with a 17-10 victory dropping the Rangers to 0-5 on the season.
Freshman
Daniel Denci (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) is having a tremendous start to his collegiate career. He went 11-1 on the afternoon in the sabre, improving his season record to a team-best, 13-2. Junior
Mark Lessner (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Regis Jesuit) helped the Rangers to three wins in the sabre with an 8-3 record on the day.
The Rangers suffered a pair of one-point losses to Cornell and Haverford. Junior
William Hollwedel (Commack, N.Y./Commack) posted five wins while
Sean McAuliffe (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) won six bouts to reach the 40-win plateau for his career.
The Rangers will have the remainder of the 2013 calendar year to prepare for the Penn State Invitational on January 12
th. Some of the top competition in the country in expected to attend, including fencers from Duke University, The University of North Carolina and the Air Force Academy.
