MADISON, N.J. – (November 6, 2013) – The number four seed University of Scranton Royals (14-5) upset the top-seeded Drew University Field Hockey team (16-3) in overtime, 3-2 tonight at Ranger Stadium. The Royals advance to their first ever Landmark Conference Championship with the victory.
Just 7:33 seconds into the overtime period, junior Alyssa Fania found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper up the right side and was able to get off a pass to the center of the circle to a wide open Meghan Kearney for the game-winning score. The assist was Fania's third point of the night.
The Royals had the #18 Rangers on the ropes in the first half opening up a 2-0 lead in the first 13:07. Fania drilled a long shot from the right side of the circle just 2:27 into the game. Scranton grabbed a two-goal lead in the 14
th minute when Krista Osborne cleaned up a defensive save by sophomore
Taryn Murphy (Wilton, Conn./Portsmouth Abbey School).
The Rangers stormed back to tie the game up before the halftime horn. Sophomore
Bea Cannavale (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) scored her fourth goal of the season on a lift that was misplayed by the Scranton goalkeeper. With 3:29 remaining in the first half,
Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) blasted her 17
th goal of the season into the back of the cage to tie the game at two.
The Rangers held an 8-7 edge in shots after the first 35 minutes but held a staggering 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Gagliano goal turned out to be the last score of regulation as neither team was able to capitalize in the second half.
The Scranton defense did not allow a Drew shot on goal in the second half. Senior
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) turned away both Royal shots in the second half and ended up with six saves on the night.
The Royals escaped a final Drew attack in the opening minutes of the overtime period before coming up with the last breakaway goal. Royal netminder, Krista Mundy made five saves to earn the victory.
Scranton will now travel down to second-seeded Catholic, who defeated Juniata 1-0 earlier this evening. The Championship game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the nation's capital.
