MADISON, N.J. (February 17, 2013) – The Drew men's fencing team won all three matches this afternoon, defeating Rutgers, Lafayette and Cornell in Baldwin Gym. The Rangers edged Cornell 14-13 in a match that came down to the final point.
Sophomore
Sean McAuliffe (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) won the final bout in the men's epee to clinch a 5-4 victory for the epee team and a 14-13 team win. McAuliffe went 5-2 on the day but registered the all important epee victory, avenging a 14-13 loss to the Big Red last season.
The Rangers locked up a 15-12 victory over Rutgers and a 16-11 win over Lafayette in the Rangers only home event of the season.
The men's foil team, who will compete at next weekend's U.S. Collegiate Squad Championships at Ohio State, moved their winning streak to nine by going 3-0 on the day. Junior
James Weiss (Somers, N.Y./Somers) was a perfect 5-0 in the meet and notched his team-leading 44
th victory of the season.
Lukas Siclare (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) was registered a team-high seven wins while fellow foilist,
Adam Campos (Medham Twp., N.J./West Morris Mendham) posted a 6-3 record.
In the sabre,
Mark Lessner (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Regis Jesuit) climbed over the .500 mark for his career with a 7-1 performance. He is now 64-60 in dual meets in two seasons at Drew.
The men's foil team will hit the road for Columbus, Ohio to compete in the U.S. Collegiate Squad Championships at Ohio State on Sunday afternoon.
