POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (February 2, 2013) – After facing some of the top fencing competition in the country in the two previous meets, the Drew men's fencing team picked up its first team win of the New Year by defeating Hunter College, 21-6.
The Rangers were 1-3 on the day, falling to hosts, Vassar, Yale and Sacred Heart. Vassar proved to be the closest dual, as Drew was clipped, 15-12. Yale topped the Rangers 22-5 while Sacred Heart emerged with a 23-4 victory.
Each of the three weapons also sported a 1-3 record on the day. Sophomore
Mark Lessner (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Regis Jesuit) and
Sean DiPeri (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) each had seven wins to lead all Drew fencers.
Senior
Ashish Shah (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Regional) finished with a 6-8 record in the sabre. Junior
James Weiss (Somers, N.Y./Somers) won six of his eight bouts on the afternoon at the foil.
The Rangers will travel to Johns Hopkins University next weekend for the MACFA A vs. MACFA C meet. Drew will square off against Haverford, William & Mary, The University of Virginia, the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins.
