Box Score MADISON, N.J. (September 19, 2013) – After a nine-day layoff, the Drew University field hockey team picked up right where it left off with a 3-1 victory over in-state foe, William Paterson (4-3) this evening at Ranger Stadium. The Rangers remain unbeaten on the season, moving to 5-0.
Senior
Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) had a hand in all three goals, scoring two and assisting on the game-winner. Sophomore
Sam Barcia (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) scored her Landmark Conference leading, ninth goal of the season. Although not seeing much action, goalkeeper
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) was credited with her 35
th career win, tying her for the most in school history with Tara Connelly C'04.
The scoring came in bunches and began in the 21
st minute. Gagliano registered her first of the night when she won a ball in the circle and beat the pioneer goalkeeper to the right side of the cage, giving Drew a 1-0 advantage.
William Paterson knotted the game up at one a little over four minutes later when Jacqui Giammetta slid a pass to the far left post to a waiting Brianne Cox. The goal was her team-leading eighth of the season. The goal would be the last shot for the Pioneer offense for the rest of the game.
The Rangers responded with the eventual game-winner just 51 seconds later when Gagliano carried a ball down the right side and centered the ball to Barcia for the second goal of the night. Drew took a 2-1 lead into the half, taking eight more shots than the Pioneers.
The Drew defense clamped down over the final 35 minutes of play, not allowing a single shot or penalty corner. The Rangers continued the offensive assault, firing 13 shots and attempting 10 penalty corners. Gagliano added the insurance goal off after being awarded a corner with 17:31 remaining in the game. Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton) and junior
Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) were credited with assists on the goal.
The Rangers will travel down the road to take on cross-street rival FDU on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Devils have been successful of late, winning four of the last five meetings. Drew holds a 24-14-4 advantage all-time against FDU.
