MADISON, N.J. (September 28, 2013) – The Drew University field hockey team is off to the best start in school history after a 2-1 overtime victory against 13
th-ranked Catholic University (5-3, 0-1 Landmark) this afternoon at Ranger Stadium. The Rangers improve to 8-0 on the season and 1-0 in Landmark Conference play.
Sophomore
Sam Barcia (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) scored her Landmark Conference leading, 12
th goal of the season with 6:22 remaining in overtime to lift the Rangers past the Cardinals. Senior
Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton) slipped a pass from the center of the circle to the far post where Barcia was waiting for the game-winner. Waleko, who scored the game's first goal, moves into a tie for 10
th place on Drew's all-time assists list.
The victory snaps an eight-game losing streak to the Cardinals, including the last two Landmark Conference Championship games. The last Drew victory against Catholic was 2-1 overtime win on October 13, 2007.
The Rangers scored the game's first goal with a little under eight minutes remaining in the first half on Waleko's third score of the season. Senior
Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) was credited with her fifth assist of the year, which helped the Rangers take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Cardinals knotted the game up, 10:58 into the second half on a reverse stick goal by Kim Hermann. Despite having much of the second half momentum, Catholic was only able to get three shots on goal in the final 35 minutes compared to just one by Drew.
Senior
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) made seven saves to earn her eighth win of the season. With today's start in the cage, Carlini now holds the school record starts by a goalkeeper with 57. Catholic netminder Megan Communale made a game-high eight saves in the loss. The Rangers held a 16-11 advantage in shots, while Catholic held a slight, 14-13 edge in penalty corners.
Drew will look for their ninth win of the season on Wednesday when they welcome Ramapo to Ranger Stadium. The game will be the first of a field hockey/men's soccer doubleheader that begins at 4:00 p.m.
