NEWARK, N.J. (September 7, 2013) – The Drew men's soccer team won their second game of the 2013 season with a 3-0 win over DeSales (0-3) in the first game of the Scarlet Raiders Classic hosted by Rutgers-Newark this evening. The Rangers improve to 2-1 on the year and will play for the tournament championship tomorrow against Hunter afternoon.

Freshman Dylan Hammer (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) was credited with the game-winner for his first half goal and also assisted on a second half score. Junior John Nogiewich (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) and senior Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) scored their first goals of the year in the contest.

Hammer scored his second goal in as many games in dramatic fashion.  With just one second remaining in the half, he came up with a loose ball on the right side of the box and shot the ball inside the far post to put the Rangers up 1-0.

The Rangers other two other scores came in the second half. Junior Michael Pezzuti (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) launched a throw in that found the head of Nogiewich, giving the Rangers a two-goal advantage. The final score of the contest came in the 70th minute when Hammer crossed the ball from the right side that Gragnano was able to fire low into the right side of the goal.

The Rangers defense allowed only two first half shots by the DeSales offense. Drew finished the game with a 22-9 advantage in shots. Junior Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) recorded his first shutout of the year and the 11th of his career. He made all saves on all five shots on goal by the Bulldogs.

The matchup was the first between DeSales and Drew since 2006. The Bulldogs won the previous three matchups against the Rangers including the Freedom Conference Championship in 2006. Drew holds a 13-3 record against DeSales all-time.

Drew is seeking their second ever Scarlet Raider Classic Championship tomorrow when they take on Hunter College at 2:00 p.m.
