NEWARK, N.J. (September 8, 2013) – The Drew men's soccer team collected its second shutout in as many games after blanking Hunter College, 3-0 this afternoon at the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raider Classic. The Rangers improve to 3-1 on the season while the Hawks remain winless at 0-5.

The Ranger defense was the story in the second meeting in the past two seasons between the two schools. The Ranger back line allowed only two shots the entire game, with only one on goal.  The Ranger offense provided plenty of firepower, netting  three scores. The Rangers have scored nine goals in their last three games.

Junior Michael Pezzuti (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) got the Rangers on the scoreboard in the closing minutes of the first half. After a Hunter yellow card, the Rangers were awarded a free kick in the attacking zone. Senior RJ Voorman (Wycoff, N.J./Ramapo) served a perfect ball into the middle of the box that Pezzuti was able to head home for his first score of the season.

Senior Ricardo Castro (Mexicali, Mexico/Vincent Memorial) got the Rangers started in the second half of play just 18 seconds in. Castro ripped a shot from 25 yards out on the right side to put the Rangers up 2-0. Drew's final goal came off the foot of Daniel Ratyniak (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Twp.) in the 73rd minute. Freshman Ian Pavlak (Hyde Park, N.Y./F.D. Roosevelt) crossed a ball from the left side that Ratyniak was able to settle and place a low shot past the Hawk goalkeeper.

Junior Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) was credited with his third win of the season, playing 72 minutes. Freshman John Marques (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) recorded the only save for the Rangers as he finished the final 18 minutes in goal.

The Rangers unleashed 41 shots on the Hunter defense and held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Rangers are now 4-0 all-time against Hunter, outscoring the Hawks, 20-1.

Rutgers-Newark was declared the tournament champions based on point differential. The Scarlet Raiders defeated Hunter on Saturday, 2-0 and DeSales this afternon, 6-0.

Drew will begin to prepare for Wednesday's Battle of Madison Ave against FDU-Florham. The annual contest will be at FDU at 7:30 p.m.
