Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2014) – The Drew University women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Mount St. Mary College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
Junior forward
Emma Campbell scored her fifth goal of the season to give the Rangers (3-6) the early lead, but the Knights (6-3) responded with three unanswered goals to protect their home turf. Mount St. Mary outshot Drew 25-6 on Wednesday.
Campbell broke her four-game scoreless streak by getting her squad on the board first in the 24
th minute. The speedy junior created her own space in the offensive zone and took a look at the MSMC goalkeeper off her line before chipping a shot over the keeper and over the goal line for the 1-0 lead.
The lead was somewhat short-lived with the Knights equalizing just four minutes later on a penalty kick after a Drew foul in the box. Junior goalkeeper
Sara Nash fought hard to keep the score tied as Mt. St. Mary turned up the heat on her back line, taking four dangerous shots over a five-minute span toward the end of the first half. Three of those attempts sailed just wide while Nash came up with a save to keep the score knotted heading into halftime.
The Knights went ahead in the 49
th minute after coming out firing from the halftime break. A rebounded shot found the foot of an open Knight, who buried the second chance with a chip shot over new Drew goalkeeper
Andee Higgins for the 2-1 lead. Higgings played a role in keeping Drew in the game by making eight saves on 17 shots faced during her 45 minutes on Wednesday.
Mount St. Mary would add the insurance goal in the 86
th minute off a cross and close out the home victory.
Drew continues Landmark Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m. when Susquehanna University comes to Ranger Stadium.
