Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 11, 2014) — Although the Drew University men's soccer team played The Catholic University of America to a scoreless draw through two overtimes on Saturday afternoon, senior goalkeeper
Michael Reyes put together a winning performance to earn his team an important point in Landmark Conference play at Ranger Stadium.
Reyes tied his career high with eight saves, including two phenomenal diving stops to deny Catholic (6-5-2, 3-1-1 Landmark Conference) of the Golden Goal in overtime. Drew's fifth draw of the season moves its Landmark record to 2-1-1.
"We are very lucky to say we have come to expect that kind of performance from Michael," said 21
st-year head coach
Lenny Armuth. "It was a big game and we needed him to play well. That's what a senior is expected to do and he has been consistent in that role this season."
The shutout was Reyes' 25
th of his career and his eight saves on Saturday are the fifth highest ever for a single game, the fifth time Reyes has recorded that mark during his four years in Madison.
The Cardinals threatened in the 32
nd minute as the offense transitioned down field and fired a shot just inside the 18-yard box, but Reyes popped the shot just over the crossbar. The defensive unit finished the job by clearing out Catholic's corner attempt. In the final minute of the first half the Rangers put together a strong strike, but sophomore forward
Lendee Henry's header sailed just wide.
The defensively contentious first half ended with Catholic leading 3-2 in shots.
Reyes certainly had assistance guarding the goal line and in the 78
th minute it was senior defender
Robert Hart that disrupted a Cardinal cross before it got to a wide open attacker to maintain the 0-0 tie. With 30 minutes left the Cardinals put together another strong offensive attack as a pass slipped behind the Drew defense and set up a fast break opportunity with little protection for Reyes. The Catholic forward shot the ball to the right and Reyes dove and once again preserved the clean sheet.
In overtime, with a free kick the Cardinals lobbed a ball to the right side of the box, where it was immediately crossed in front of the goalmouth and touched to the left corner. Reyes quickly shifted and was able to get his fingertips on the ball and deflected it wide where a Ranger defender cleared the ball up field.
Catholic again threatened to walk off with the win in the 106
th minute when the Cardinals crossed a ball and Reyes came off his line. With Reyes cutting down the angle, Catholic executed a quick pass along the line to free a wide open shot eight yards out. The shot was low right, and just pinged off the post and back into the box.
Drew managed just one shot in overtime, a blocked attempt by sophomore defender
Ian Pavlak.
The Rangers will host Amherst College, currently ranked No. 9 in Division III, on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Ranger Stadium at 7:00 p.m. for the final non-conference match of the season under the lights. Landmark Conference play resumes on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Goucher College.
