Dylan Hammer scored the late game-winner in the 82
nd minute as the Drew University men's soccer team won a 2-1 decision over host Goucher College on Saturday afternoon in a crucial Landmark Conference match.
Senior midfielder
John Nogiewich opened the scoring in the 52
nd minute with his second goal of the season, but Goucher equalized in the 59
th. Hammer netted the game-winner after freshman forward
Benjamin Audi's shot was rebounded back into play by the keeper. With the victory the Rangers (7-4-5, 3-1-1 Landmark) positioned themselves in third place in the Landmark Conference with three league games remaining on the 2014 schedule. Goucher fell to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
"We played a tough game when there was a lot on the line," head coach
Lenny Armuth said. "This is the most important part of the season and we found a way to convert two great opportunities today for the win. The senior leadership was also important today in keeping the momentum from our last few games and translating it into a good performance on the road."
After a scoreless first half, the Rangers came out in the second with their eyes on the goal. In the first five minutes of the half, Drew took three shots on goal and were able to force two corner kick opportunities. Then in the 52
nd, Audi's well-placed corner kick was touched on by sophomore
Cole Leckburg toward Nogiewich, who shot to the low corner for the 1-0 lead. Both Audi and Leckburg picked up assists on the play.
Upon Goucher's restart after the goal, the Gophers pressured the Ranger defense and tied the game at 1-1 after a free kick, which was headed into the top left corner.
With the game on the line and with a potential Landmark berth at stake, both teams exchanged a barrage of shots. Senior goalkeeper

th minute made a decisive save to prevent the home team from taking the lead. With Drew regaining possession, in the 82
nd minute Audi fired a shot which rebounded off of the Goucher goalie where teammate
Dylan Hammer was there to recover the loose ball and score the final tally and game-winner for a 2-1 Ranger win.
The Rangers outshot the Gophers 14-13, but Drew's chances proved more dangerous as the Goucher goalie was forced to make six saves compared to Reyes' two.
Drew returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 22 when they host The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a Landmark Conference matchup at 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Ranger Stadium.
