Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 27, 2014) – The Drew University field hockey team was edged by The University of Scranton, 1-0, after a hard-fought Landmark Conference battle on Monday evening at Ranger Stadium.
The Royals (12-4, 4-2 Landmark) clinched a spot in the conference playoffs by scoring the game's lone goal in the 57
th minute and holding on for the clean sheet. The loss eliminates Drew (3-11, 2-4) from playoff contention.
"There shouldn't be much disappointment surrounding this team because of the heart, passion and hustle they have played with over the last few games," said head coach
Felicia Cappabianca. "The only disappointing thing is that we didn't play this well earlier in the season. There is such great talent on this team, but the wins didn't fall for us in September."
The Rangers had the first real chance at breaking the scoreless deadlock in the 21
st minute. Junior forward
Kirby Clark inserted from a penalty corner and after some quick passing, junior midfielder
Amber De Marco blasted a shot above the waist that required a fantastic save from the Royals' goalkeeper.
Scranton threatened to take a 1-0 lead in the 26
th minute of the first half when a short cross traveling along the Drew goal line was destined for a Royal attacker, but freshman defender
Michele Pozyc was there to break up the play and clear the ball out of danger.
Scranton opened the second half with increased pressure in the first 15 minutes of the period, getting three shots off toward junior goalkeeper
Sarah Stewart, who saved the first. The second hit the post and deflected out of bounds and the third was placed into the back of the Drew cage for the 1-0 Scranton advantage.
Freshman forward
Madi Sheetz had a chance to equalize in the 63
rd minute, but her high shot was batted away by a sprawling Scranton keeper. Sophomore defender
Cailyn Breski came up with a defensive save in the 69
th minute to prevent Scranton from stretching its lead late in the game.
Drew plays its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 4:00 p.m. against Mercy College at Ranger Stadium before the season finale at Moravian College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1.
