Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. (Oct. 4, 2014) – The Drew University Field Hockey team (1-9, 0-2) was edged 2-1 in a Landmark Conference match at Susquehanna University (6-6, 1-1) on Saturday afternoon.
The Rangers got onto the scoreboard first in the 10th minute of the match. Sophomore midfielder
Huma Sheikh cranked a shot on goal, which was saved by the Crusaders goalkeeper, however Sheikh was able to possess the rebound, and her second opportunity would not be denied.
The advantage lasted five minutes before the Crusaders found the equalizer on a three-on-one situation. Susquehanna used the numbers advantage to free up an open attacker and scored on the open net for the 1-1 tie.
Drew held an edge in possession and offensive chances throughout the first half, eventually holding a 9-8 lead in shots heading into halftime tied. It was one defensive play from the Rangers that allowed the score to be tied rather than a Susquehanna lead. Junior midfielder
Michelle Fallon came up with her first of three defensive saves on Saturday.
Susquehanna took the lead for the first time in the 44
th minute by poking in a loose ball near the post. Six minutes later, the Crusaders had a chance to extend the lead but Fallon was manning the goal line for the defensive save to keep Drew in the game.
After Susquehanna's go-ahead goal, the Rangers' intensity increased by taking four straight shots, three of which forced saves by the Crusaders' keeper. Both teams had nearly identical statistics. Each took 16 shots on goal, and Drew held a 9-8 edge on penalty corners. Fallon collected three defensive saves for the Rangers while Stewart had three saves as well.
The Crusaders clamped down on defense after that barrage as Drew didn't take another shot until the 64
th minute.
The Rangers return to action next Saturday, Oct.11 when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on defending Landmark Conference champion The Catholic University of America at 1:00 p.m.
