Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 4, 2014) – The Drew University men's soccer team unseated the two-time defending Landmark Conference champions Susquehanna University, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in a conference match at Ranger Stadium.
Freshman forward
Benjamin Audi scored his team-leading third and fourth goals, bookending the game-winner by senior midfielder
Daniel Ratyniak. Senior midfielder
John Nogiewich and freshman defender
Eduardo Martinez picked up assists during the Rangers' three-goal output, while senior goalkeeper
Michael Reyes made four saves to preserve the Landmark victory.
"We played a complete, 90-minute game against a tough opponent in an important match," said head coach
Lenny Armuth. "We took advantage of our opportunities in front of their net, and didn't allow them many chances to score. We wanted to limit our mistakes and giveaways in the midfield, and we did that well today to help pick up a big conference win."
Sophomore midfielder
Joe Sollod created the opening score with blinding speed on the right flank. After beating his man outside the 18-yard box, Sollod's cross found the foot of Audi, who took a one-time shot that was saved by the Susquehanna keeper and rebounded. Audi collected the second chance and buried it for the 1-0 lead.
"We're glad to see that his nose for goal is becoming a habit," Armuth said. "We knew he had the potential, and the fact that he's following through as a freshman says a lot about him as a player."
Nogiewich had the next two attempts at goal, but it was Susquehanna that would tie the game on their next shot in the 38
th minute. On a free kick 30 yards from the goal line, the free ball was placed perfectly on the head of Susquehanna's Jake Heyser, who flicked it on into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1, which would hold until halftime.
It only took the Rangers six minutes into the second period to go ahead thanks to the passing of Nogiewich and the head of Ratyniak. Nogiewich gained control of the ball on the right sideline in the 52
nd minute and crossed a ball in front of the Crusaders' goalmouth. The cross found a streaking Ratyniak, who headed home his second goal of the season for the eventual game-winning goal.
The Rangers took the next three shots, but Susquehanna's next one needed a spectacular save by Reyes, who dove to his left to stop a potential game-tying goal in the 68
th. Reyes and the defense did their job and were rewarded with a pressure-relieving insurance goal in the 88
th minute when Audi got his second goal off a pass back from Martinez that Audi blasted by the goalkeeper.
Reyes made his fourth save with two minutes remaining before celebrating a win with his team, the 25
th of his career as a goalkeeper. That mark now stands alone for seventh place all-time at Drew.
