Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. (Oct. 8, 2014) – In a battle for first place in the Landmark Conference, The University of Scranton edged the Drew University men's soccer team, 1-0, with a late goal to break an 81-minute stalemate on Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.
The action was back-and-forth between the two remaining undefeated teams early in the Landmark Conference season showed why they sat atop the standings. Scranton (9-2-1, 3-0) would stake claim to the top spot, however, with a goal in the 82
nd minute to drop Drew's record to 6-3-4 overall and 2-1 in Landmark play.
The first half was a 45-minute battle for field possession and offensive opportunities, and the parity on the pitch Wednesday was evident early on. Both sides took six shots during the opening half, but none truly threatened to break the scoreless draw. Drew's first shot on target came during the final minute when sophomore forward
Lendee Henry's shot caused the Scranton keeper to leave his feet for a jumping save.
Meanwhile, the Drew defense and senior goalkeeper
Michael Reyes were busy limiting the Royals' attack. Scranton put two shots on goal during the first half, but Reyes was able to make the saves to keep the contest deadlocked heading into halftime. Reyes finished with four saves on Wednesday.
Freshman forward
Benjamin Audi again proved to be one of the most dangerous threats from the Drew strikers as he took two shots on goal early in the second half that forced saves from the Scranton goalkeeper.
Midfield possession battles dominated the majority of the second half and chances at net were sparse, but it was the Royals who broke through in the 82
nd minute by firing in a shot off a long cross from the sideline. Quick and crisp passing by the Royals in the Rangers' defensive zone set up the decisive tally.
The Rangers threatened to equalize during a tense final two minutes for the Scranton defense on two corner kicks that yielded two Drew shots. Sophomore midfielder
Joe Sollod had his shot saved in the 89
th minute before a dangerous header attempt by senior defender
Robert Hart drifted wide.
Drew hops right back into Landmark Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 11 when The Catholic University of America heads to Ranger Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
