Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 1, 2014) – The Drew University men's soccer team came from behind and received three goals from four-year players on Senior Day to beat Moravian College, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium, clinching the No. 3 seed in the Landmark Conference Championships.
The Rangers punched their ticket to the postseason by scoring a season-high four goals in the Landmark Conference clash. Moravian needed a victory to have a chance for the Landmark Tournament. Drew will travel to No. 2 The United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the semifinals, their first trip to the Landmark Championships since 2012.
The Greyhounds (5-10-3, 3-4-1 Landmark) raced out to the first lead of the game by scoring in the 32
nd minute after a perfect placed shot to the upper 90s of the goal. The Rangers (9-5-5, 5-2-1) responded with three consecutive goals, two by senior midfielder
John Nogiewich and another by freshman
Eduardo Martinez. Moravian crept back to make it 3-2 late in the game, but senior
Tommy Tolve made it 4-2 in the 88
th minute for his first goal of the season in his final regular season game at home.
"The seniors fed off the energy of the day and really had each other's backs," said head coach
Lenny Armuth. "The whole team played for the seniors and matched their intensity on a day where we could not lose if we wanted to control our own destiny for the playoffs. They showed great resolve and determination to come back after Moravian took the lead, and that's the kind of attitude we'll have to have going into the playoffs."
Nogiewich celebrated his Senior Day in grand fashion with two goals, one to equalize and another to take the lead for good. The senior responded to the Moravian's opening tally with a blast in the 41
st minute off a cross from sophomore
Dylan Hammer. The contest would remain tied until halftime and well into the second half.
Nogiewich got the chance to put Moravian ahead when he was called on to take a penalty kick in the 75
th minute after a hard Greyhound foul in the box. The senior buried the attempt for his fourth goal of the season and the 2-1 Drew lead. Four minutes later, Martinez netted his third of the season to give the Rangers a comfortable cushion heading down the stretch, assisted by sophomore
Bass Etta-Ashu.
The cushion proved important as the Greyhounds fought back to score their second goal in the 85
th minute after a fumble in the box to cut the Drew advantage in half. Tolve made sure there would be no comeback on his Senior Day by ripping a cannon of a shot from 25 yards out and past the Moravian goalkeeper.
Drew outshot Moravian 27-6 on Saturday and took nine corner kicks to the Greyhounds' four. Moravian's goalkeeper Brian Boland made eight saves while facing a barrage of 12 Ranger shots on target.
The semifinal matchup at Merchant Marine will be a rematch of the 2014 meeting on Oct. 22 that saw the Mariners walk away with a 2-1 victory in overtime at Ranger Stadium.
