Box Score MADISON, N.J. (April 10, 2014) – While records fell on Thursday night at Ranger Stadium, the Drew University women's lacrosse player at the center of it all gave all the credit to her teammates.
Junior midfielder
Krysta Cento broke the school records for points in a game with 12 and assists in a game with nine as the Rangers (8-3) topped Ramapo College 19-7 in non-conference action.
Cento's 12 points on nine assists and three goals passed four previous Rangers' mark of 11 points in a game, the first of which was set on this day 30 years ago by Judi Cavalli against Cedar Crest College. The junior's nine assists passed her own school record of eight she set last April 24 against Gwynedd-Mercy College.
"It's a big honor and it's something I could never do without my teammates," said Cento, who now has 35 goals and 29 assists on the 2014 season. Junior attacker
Nikki Kleiman scored eight goals on Thursday, which is tied for second in the Drew record books for goals in a game.
"I especially couldn't do it without Nikki," Cento said. "We're best friends on and off the field. The freshmen knew how to step up today, too, which is exciting heading into the rest of the season. We keep getting better as a team."
The Roadrunners (3-5) kept it close early, tying the game at 6-6 with 8:19 remaining in the first half. Kleiman scored her third and fourth goals of the game within the next two minutes for the 8-6 lead, including a man-down goal.
"I didn't think our opening strategy worked," said head coach
Julia Steier. "We went back to what we're used to doing and we found our comfort zone. That's what led to us breaking out."
Drew went on to score 11 straight goals to take 17-6 lead with 19:15 remaining in the game. Cento picked up six assists during that stretch, four of which were fed to Kleiman.
"Krysta is really good at finding passing lanes," Steier said. "She and Nikki can be very potent on the attacking end, and if one of them draws attention, the other one is open. You need to stop the playmaker and we have plenty of those."
Meanwhile, freshmen goalkeepers
Gianna Minogue and
Jadin James split time in net to seal the victory. Minogue picked up the win in net while making four saves, while James allowed just one goal in the second half to go with five saves.
Senior midfielder
Brooke Gagliano added three goals for the Rangers while picking up four ground balls. Freshman attacker
Anna Fiorini netted two tallies, while senior defender/midfielder
Jess Johnson chipped in with a goal and an assist with a game-high five ground balls.
Freshmen attackers
Theresa Shafron and
Charlotte Brown each recorded a goal in the victory on Thursday evening.
Cento assisted on Brown's goal with 20:58 left on the clock to put Drew up 16-6.
"I think assists are just as important as a goal," Cento said. "It's great to celebrate when you score a goal, but when you get an assist, you know you made it happen. We're all making each other better on the field and that's my main focus for this season."
The Rangers look to stretch the winning streak to three games when they visit Kean University on Wednesday, April 16 at 6 p.m.
