Women's Lax Clinches Playoff Berth on Senior Day

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (April 19, 2014) – The Drew University women's lacrosse team clinched a berth in the 2014 Landmark Conference Tournament by defeating Goucher College, 20-11, on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.

The 20-goal outburst was a season high for the Rangers (10-4, 4-1 Landmark Conference), who are currently in a three-way tie at the top of the league standings with four wins.

All five Drew seniors celebrated their final regular season contest on home turf by chipping into the playoff-clinching victory. Kaitlyn Dalziel, who is out with an injury, provided her patented leadership and excitement from the sideline. Brooke Gagliano netted two goals and picked up an assist, while Jess Johnson tallied a goal, dished out two assists and picked up two groundballs.

Dana Colon grabbed two groundballs and Alexandra Mattiace scooped a groundball and caused two turnovers.

"It was a great way to end our home stretch by clinching a playoff spot," said second-year head coach Julia Steier, who leads the Rangers to the Landmark Tournament for the seventh straight year. "We played hard and to do so in front of friends and family is a great way to go out for these seniors at Ranger Stadium."

Johnson scored midway through the first half in the midst of an 8-1 Ranger run. The run erased an early 2-0 Goucher lead, and Gagliano assisted on the tally that made it 7-3, Rangers, when she found junior attacker Nikki Kleiman in front of the Gophers' goal.

"These seniors have done an incredible job leading our young team, which has 10 freshmen," Steier said. "They showed how hard work and resilience translates on the field. We're looking forward to our last conference game at Catholic next Saturday."

Kleiman assumed a familiar role leading the Rangers in scoring with six more goals on Saturday, giving the junior 52 goals this season. That mark currently ranks first in the Landmark Conference going into the final week of the regular season.

After Goucher (7-8, 2-3) took its 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the game, freshman attacker Morgan Mason scored her first of three goals to get the Rangers on the board. Kleiman then scored two in a row, and Mason added another for the 4-2 lead with 22:20 left in the first half.

Goucher got one back 40 seconds later, but Kleiman scored twice more, while Johnson and junior midfielder Krysta Cento added two more for the 8-3 advantage with 11:23 left in the opening half.

Cento finished the game with three assists and five goals, which puts her atop the Landmark with 88 points this season. Kleiman is second on the list with 80.

Meanwhile, freshmen goalkeepers Jadin James and Gianna Minogue tended the net effectively to preserve the win. James started the game and picked up the win in net after allowing eight goals and stopping five shots in 34 minutes. Minogue played the final 26 minutes, conceding three goals and picking up two saves.

Freshman Anna Fiorini assisted on three Drew goals on Saturday, and scored one of her own in the second half with 18:22 left to give the Rangers a 17-9 lead. Freshmen Charlotte Brown and Theresa Shafron each added a goal in Drew's largest offensive output of the season.

The Rangers conclude the regular season with a trip to The Catholic University of America on Saturday, April 26 at 11 a.m. The Cardinals are on top of the Landmark standings with a 4-0 league record.
