Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Aug. 31, 2014) – The Drew University field hockey team fell to 0-2 on the season after a 3-2 loss to Lebanon Valley College on Sunday to conclude the 31
st Annual Fall Festival tournament.
The Dutchmen were the Fall Fest champions by way of a 2-0 record. Lebanon Valley's senior defender Lauren Brumbach was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
While the season's first win eluded the Rangers during the opening weekend, Drew did find the back of the box four times and set some standards to improve upon going forward into 2014.
"It was a night and day difference between Friday and Sunday," said head coach
Felicia Cappabianca, whose squad dropped the opener to Cabrini College, 4-2, on Friday. "We did some nice things today and took two separate leads. We're still trying to mesh a new lineup and play well together as a team, and that takes time. We're seeing progress."
The Blue & Green struck first on Sunday when sophomore forward
Huma Sheikh scored her first goal as a Ranger in the 20
th minute for the 1-0 lead. Junior midfielder
Bea Cannavale set Sheikh up with a long diagonal pass across the LVC goal. Sheikh was waiting by the post for the tap in.
In the 27
th minute, the Dutchmen equalized when an LVC shot was saved by junior goalkeeper
Sarah Stewart, but the rebound was collected by the Dutchmen and slotted home to tie the game at 1-1. The game remained knotted heading into halftime.
Drew started the second period with some offensive energy, getting the lead back 35 seconds into the half. Senior midfielder
Melissa Boyd led junior forward
Kirby Clark with a strong pass toward the LVC net. Clark took the pass in stride moving forward and swiftly scored the tap-in goal from close range.
"Kirby has stepped up from last year to this year," Cappabianca said. "She has taken on more of a leadership role, has great energy and does more than is asked of her. She's trying to help players around her be better, as well. It was good to see her score today."
Lebanon Valley again had the answer in the 42
nd minute on another rebound goal. The Dutchmen's Lyndee Sheaffer collected her own rebounded shot and put the second attempt away for the 2-2 tie. It was Sheaffer's second goal of the game and fourth of the tournament.
The Dutchmen would get the game-winner in the 48
th minute on a long blast taken just inside the right corner of the circle. It was their first Fall Fest championship in their third appearance in the annual season opening tournament.
In the setback the Rangers found a barometer on both things they did well, and things to work on.
"
Melissa Boyd has been a great leader on the field and has played fantastic hockey," Cappabianca said. "Bea and [junior midfielder]
Michelle Fallon have been in on the attack, along with Huma. Our corners look good, our forward line created good chances and Stewart made some heads up saves in goal. It wasn't what we're looking for from opening weekend, but we know what strides we have to make."
Drew looks to rebound when they return to Ranger Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 6:00 p.m. to host the No. 3 ranked team in Division III, Montclair State University.
