Strong First Half Propels Stevens By Rangers, 4-1

Box Score HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2014) – The Drew University field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision on the road to Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

Freshman defender Michele Pozyc came up with another defensive save, giving the Drew rookie six for the season. Just four games into the season, that mark moves into ninth place for the most in a single season in the Drew record books.

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Stewart made a career-high 13 saves, which is tied for the 10th most in a single game for the Rangers. The Ducks' offense was too much, however, as Stevens got out to an early 1-0 lead in the 5th minute and eventually took a 3-0 advantage into halftime.

The first Ducks goal came off a crossing pass that was touched to the post and put away for the 1-0 lead. Stevens went ahead 2-0 in the 11th minute off a penalty corner, and made it 3-0 in the 31st off a breakaway down the left side of the field.

Drew came out of the locker room at half with renewed energy, dominating shot chances over a nine-minute stretch and eventually breaking through for a goal. Freshman Madi Sheetz netted her first career goal in the 47th minute when sophomore Huma Sheikh shot the ball toward the far post and Sheetz was there for the tap-in.

Sheetz and Sheikh controlled the offense for the Rangers on Wednesday. Both took a team-high six shots with Sheetz putting five on goal and Sheikh getting four on target.

The Drew offense was economical with its shots, putting 15 of 22 total shots on frame, forcing 12 saves from the Stevens keeper and two defensive saves from the Ducks' back line unit.

The Rangers continue a three-game road stint on Friday, Sept. 12 at Muhlenberg College at 7:00 p.m. under the lights in Allentown, Pa.
