Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2014) – The 2014 men's soccer Battle of Madison Avenue between cross-street rivals Drew University and FDU-Florham turned into a 110-minute war that ended in a stalemate.
The Rangers (2-1-2) and Devils (2-2-1) played to a 2-2 draw under the lights at Ranger Stadium on Wednesday evening, the first time in 31 matches that Drew did not leave with a victory. Junior defender
Daniel Giraldo and freshman midfielder
Benjamin Audi each scored for the second straight game in the draw.
The double-overtime thriller was a seesaw battle throughout the contest. The Devils struck first in the 23
rd minute when a Chaz Armand shot was saved by senior goalkeeper
Michael Reyes, but the rebound found the foot of Armand, who swiftly tucked it away for the 1-0 lead. That advantage would hold until halftime.
After half, the Rangers shifted formations and began putting more players forward. That effort was rewarded in the 59
th minute when senior midfielder
John Nogiewich cut a perfect pass back toward Audi, who netted his second goal in as many days with a one-time shot to the back of the net from 12 yards out.
Both teams exchanged chances over the next 20 minutes, and Drew's persistent pressure paid off in the 79
th minute. A scrum in front of the FDU-Florham goal line resulted in a loose ball, and Giraldo ran on to fire a shot inside the right post for the 2-1 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Devils equalized just 1:30 later on another loose ball, this time in front of the Drew goal. The Devils' Tommy Asselta was the one to step up to tie the game again with his third goal of the season.
FDU-Florham edged Drew in shots in the two overtime periods, 4-3, and FDU-Florham goalkeeper Nick Mihalik made two big saves during the final 10 minutes to preserve the historic draw. Senior defender
Michael Pezzuti and Audi put those shots on net looking for the Golden Goal.
Reyes finished the evening with five saves, including one in the 99
th minute to prevent Drew's rivals from walking off its turf with a win.
Drew is set to play its fourth game in seven days on Saturday, Sept. 13 when The College of New Jersey visits Ranger Stadium for a 3:30 p.m. as part of a Drew soccer doubleheader.
