Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 23, 2014) — The Drew University field hockey team fell in the Battle of Madison Avenue to cross-street rival FDU-Florham, 4-1, on a crisp Tuesday evening at Ranger Stadium.
The Devils (5-2) scored in the very first minute of the match and never looked back, buiding a 4-0 lead until junior midfielder
Bea Cannavale made sure the Rangers (0-7) did not leave the battle empty-handed. Cannavale netted her third goal of the season in the final minute of play when junior midfielder
Amber De Marco found her open off a free hit and Cannavale cranked a shot from the top of the circle for the Rangers' lone goal of the evening.
Just 40 seconds into the match, the Devils attacked down the right side of the field and crossed a ball above the circle to a cutting midfielder who possessed the ball just inside the circle on the left side and blasted a shot into the net for the blistering fast 1-0 lead.
In the 27
th minute, on a similar attack down the right side, FDU-Florham carried the ball inside of the circle and crossed it in front of the goalmouth where a weak side attacker tipped the ball in to take a 2-0 advantage.
Going down 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game, the Rangers' intensity picked up for the latter part of the first half. In the 23
rd minute, freshman forward
Madi Sheetz regained possession of the ball in the Devils' defensive end and transitioned quickly. Her scoring attempt was thwarted by Devils goalie Amy Defnet, who made seven saves on Tuesday, but it provided enough energy to get the women in Blue & Green refocused.
At the midway mark of the half, sophomore goalkeeper
Jadin James made her second appearance this season. The Drew defense began to cut the angles down as FDU-Florham tried to carry the ball down the strong side of the field, and sparked several Ranger transitions. Drew was mounting offensive momentum, but with 21 seconds remaining in the half, the Devils were able to slip a ball behind the defense and past James to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The Rangers kept the energy level high in the second half and consistent pressure led to multiple penalty corner opportunities. Drew took 14 penalty corners in the second half alone and held a 16-3 advantage on corners by game's end. Defnet and the Devils defense were up for the added challenge and turned Drew away each time.
Sheetz took all of Drew's corners on Tuesday, and one in the 43
rd minute targeted freshman defender
Michele Pozyc. The rookie fired a ball toward the Devils' cage and sophomore
Huma Sheikh's attempt at a deflection goal was snuffed out by Defnet.
Over the span of three minutes, Drew had five penalty corner attempts, but again failed to convert despite the never-quit attitude and pressure applied to the FDU-Florham back line.
The Devils took the 4-0 lead in the 57
th minute when a Drew turnover led to a one-on-one challenge with the keeper, and FDU converted.
A brand new season starts on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Ranger Stadium, where the 2014 Landmark Conference slate will kick off when Juniata College visits Madison at 1:00 p.m.
