No. 12 Rutgers-Camden Tops Men's Soccer, 2-1

Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 6, 2014) – The Drew University men's soccer team dropped its first game of the 2014 season with a 2-1 loss at No. 12 Rutgers-Camden Saturday afternoon in the 14th Annual Cialella Soccer Classic.

The Rangers (1-1-1) tried to chip away at a 2-0 lead built by the nationally ranked Scarlet Raptors with a penalty kick goal by senior forward Daniel Ratyniak in the 54th minute. Rutgers-Camden held on during the final half hour to improve to 2-2 on a brutally hot and humid late-summer afternoon.

The Raptors took a quick lead on Saturday with a goal in the fourth minute. Mike Ryan slid a nifty angle shot past goalkeeper Michael Reyes, the first tally allowed by the Drew senior in 2014. The goal was the first shot taken in the game by either side.

Rutgers-Camden took what is known as the most dangerous lead in soccer, 2-0, in just the 12th minute as Ryan assisted Juan Rojas just inside the Rangers' 18-yard box to take control of the game. The Raptors' 2-0 lead came before Drew took a single shot on Saturday.

That first shot was taken by freshman Benjamin Audi after the Rangers shuffled the lineup. Drew began generating some offensive chances with shots by sophomore Brandon Kokich and Bass Etta-Ashu.

Freshman Fil Goncalves and senior defender Michael Pezzuti each tested the Raptors' keeper in the final five minutes of the first half, but Eric Bumbera came up with two saves to maintain the 2-0 lead heading into half.

In the 54th minute, Ratyniak blasted a shot toward the Raptors' net. The shot struck a defender's hand and the referee signaled for a penalty shot. Ratyniak finished what he started by converting the PK for his first goal of the season as the Rangers cut the lead to 2-1.

Offensive opportunities dwindled as the oppressive heat continued at the Cialella Classic. The Rangers, however, sprung to life as four different players fired a shot within a four-minute span with about 20 minutes left. Shots by sophomore midfielder Kevin Baroz and senior midfielder Tommy Tolve forced saves by the Raptors' keeper.

Reyes was again asked to keep Drew in the game, making back-to-back saves in the 76th minute. The senior goaltender made six saves in the setback.

The Rangers return for Game 2 of the Cialella Classic at Rutgers-Camden on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2:00 p.m. against New Jersey City University.
