Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 7, 2014) — Freshman midfielder
Benjamin Audi scored the Golden Goal in overtime and assisted on another tally as the Drew University men's soccer team scored a 2-1 victory over New Jersey City University at the Cialella Soccer Classic on Sunday at Rutgers-Camden.
The Rangers (2-1-1) were runners-up at the 14
th Annual Cialella Classic with a 1-1 record and an even goal differential. Susquehanna University finished third with a 1-1 record and -3 differential, and NJCU finishes fourth after an 0-2 weekend.
Audi, senior goalkeeper
Michael Reyes, and senior defender
Michael Pezzuti were named to the Cialella Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team.
Drew dominated possession and offensive chances in the first half, outshooting the Gothic Knights 12-3 and taking a 1-0 lead on junior defender
Daniel Giraldo's first goal of the season in the 41
st minute. NJCU turned up the pressure in the second half and equalized in the 56
th minute.
The final 34 minutes of regulation were deadlocked and the Rangers entered their second overtime game of the season. The Gothic Knights played their fifth overtime in as many contests to start the season. It took just 2:56 into the sudden-death extra time for Audi to strike the back of the net and to end the game in a Blue & Green celebration.
The New Jersey City goalkeeper attempted a clear, but Audi was there to meet the ball about 35 yards from net. The Drew rookie took a one-touch shot with his left foot with the keeper out of position and his first career collegiate goal went down as an overtime game-winner.
"We're seeing some really great things from Ben early on," said head coach
Lenny Armuth. "He's all over the field and excels in every situation he finds himself in. He showed great awareness to take that one-touch shot and was rewarded for taking the risk."
Audi proved his versatility on Drew's opening score of the match in the 41
st minute. His assist came on a short corner kick delivered to Giraldo, who drilled a shot to the far post for the 1-0 lead. After halftime, the Knights responded with a breakaway goal after turning up the offensive heat on the Drew back line.
"We had our chances to put them away, but a few mistakes in the back allowed them back in the game," Armuth said. "A win is a win, and we'll take it, but there are some things that we need to sort out. We're constantly making adjustments and will not rest until we are where we want to be for our conference schedule."
Reyes made eight saves, six of which coming in the second half and one big one in overtime before Audi's game-winner.
The Rangers ended up outshooting NJCU 23-15 and held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Drew has a short turnaround for one of the biggest games of the season. The Rangers go for their 31
st win in a row against crosstown rivals FDU-Florham on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 7:00 p.m. under the lights at Ranger Stadium.
