Championship Central
MADISON, N.J. (Nov. 2, 2016) – The third-seeded Drew University men's soccer team travels to No. 2 The University of Scranton on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. for the Landmark Conference Championship semifinals at Fitzpatrick Field.
Fans attending the match are reminded that admission will be charged at the gate: $5 for adults and $3 for seniors (62 and older) and non-Landmark Conference students. Children ages 10 and under are admitted free of charge, as are all Landmark Conference students, faculty and staff with their school ID. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m.
By the Numbers: The Rangers head into the postseason with a 10-4-3 overall record and a 4-1-2 mark in conference play, which earned the No. 3 postseason seed. Similar to one year ago – when Scranton won the Landmark Championship title – the Royals (12-3-1) earned the No. 2 seed following a hot streak to end the season.
Scranton enters its sixth Landmark Conference Championship, while the Rangers participate in their eighth tournament in the league's 10-year history. Drew last won a title in the inaugural championship game in 2007, a 2-0 win over Scranton. The Royals' title in 2015 is their only Landmark championship.
Last Meeting: In their regular season match in Scranton on Oct. 5, Drew roared back from a 1-0 deficit at halftime, scoring twice in a four-minute span in the second period to take a 2-1 victory from the Royals. This also proved to be Scranton's final regular season loss of the year, as well.
Freshman forward
Andy Imoh had his hand in both goals, scoring the first and assisting sophomore
Anthony McMyne's goal shortly after. Senior goalkeeper
John Marques made four saves in the victory.
Key Matchups: In the tense battleground of scoring the first goal, the difference may come from each teams' current scoring leaders. Imoh leads the Rangers – and ranks third in the conference – with eight goals this fall, while adding three assists for a total of 19 points. Leading the way for Scranton on the offensive end has been senior forward Henry Bonilla, who has scored a team-high seven goals.
Both defenses have been strong, as well. Led by sophomore center back
Niko Cserhat, the Rangers' backline has posted eight shutouts. The Royals, fronted by seniors Pat Codispoti and Matthew Busch, have been just as dominant, registering eight shutout victories in the regular season.
Marques has accounted for five of those shutouts in net with 40 saves, a 1.01 goals-against average and a .769 save percentage. His counterpart in the semifinals, senior Eric Hintz has registered another strong season for Scranton, recording a goals-against average of 0.90, along with 47 saves. Hintz has also recorded four shutout victories on the year, the last coming in Scranton's 1-0 regular season finale win at Catholic on Saturday.
