TOWSON, Md. (Nov. 9, 2016) – Freshman
Andy Imoh has been voted the Landmark Conference Men's Soccer Rookie of the Year and joins senior
Dylan Hammer and junior
Fil Goncalves on the
2016 All-Conference Teams.
Imoh, a high-scoring forward with blinding speed, makes the First Team following a breakout rookie season, while Hammer adds a First Team nod to a Second Team honor back in 2014. Goncalves, a reliable and shutdown defender, garners the first All-Conference selection of his career with a mention on the Second Team.
Imoh becomes the Rangers' third Landmark Rookie of the Year and second in the last three years (Benjami Audi – 2014). He led the Rangers in point scoring with eight goals and three assists, with his goal total ranking third in the conference and point total coming in at fourth. Two of his goals were scored as game-winners, and his nine points on four goals and an assist in Landmark games was tied for second in the league.
"The secret was out pretty quick on Andy," said head coach
Lenny Armuth. "He's a weapon up top, with skill in finishing, distributing and possession. We're excited to see how he grows with our program."
Hammer's second career appearance on the All-Conference list comes after a six-goal, three-assist campaign. Drew's general in the midfield, he was named a team captain for the second straight year, and delivered with 15 points to rank second on the club. Three of his tallies were game-winners for the Blue & Green, including a Golden Goal in overtime in the 4-3 win at DeSales University on Sept. 10. The senior captain also scored the lone goal in two 1-0 Drew wins, at Swarthmore on Oct. 12 and home against Catholic on Oct. 22.
"Dylan has been an important four-year contributor to our team, and it's a great honor to be named one of the top midfielders in the league," Armuth said. "His ability to possess in the middle of the field and see the offense develop in front of him has been very valuable."
Goncalves is a tenacious outside defender that helped the stingy Rangers' defensive unit post a goals-against average of 1.00 this season. His defending on the outside aided in eight Drew shutouts this fall. He played in all 18 games this season, making 17 starts and ranking second on the team with 1,420 minutes played. Goncalves picked up his first career point this season by assisting on a goal in the 3-0 win at Manhattanville.
"Fil brings a combination of speed and toughness to our defense," Armuth said. "Not many attackers could get by him easily. He's grown as a player and will be a very important part of our defense when he returns as a senior."
Imoh, Hammer, Goncalves and the Rangers are not quite done with the 2016 season. Following an exit from the Landmark Conference Championships in the semifinal round at Scranton,
Drew has qualified for the ECAC Championship Tournament. The second-seeded Rangers (10-5-3) travel to Rutgers-Camden for the first round on Saturday, Nov. 12 against No. 3 New York University.
