MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University men's and women's cross country teams took on its two local rivals on Tuesday at the Battle for Madison Avenue, held at Giralda Farms.
Drew, FDU-Florham, and Saint Elizabeth University squared off in a 2.15-mile race, and the Rangers nearly captured both individual winners.
On the men's side, freshman
Shawn Corcoran breezed to victory, beating out seven other runners by nearly a minute. With a time of 12 minutes, 13 seconds, he bested runner-up Louis Torres of FDU by 58 seconds.
Drew ended up taking two of the top-three spots, as junior
Matthew Ortiz placed third in 13:12.
None of the three teams had the minimum five runners to post a team score.
The women's race came down to a photo finish, and FDU's Bridget Lapham just edged out Drew junior
Aubrey Johnson by seventh-tenths of a second, 13:00.0 to 13:00.7.
Junior
Virginia Gaylord was the Rangers' second finisher, placing fifth among 20 runners with a time of 14:21. Classmates
Carly Orent (seventh, 14:58),
Samantha Villanueva (10th, 15:43), and
Charlotte Principal (11th, 15:50) rounded out the team scoring while juniors
Tabitha Lopes (13th, 16:16) and
Marina Murillo (14th, 16:45) were also in action.
In the team standings, FDU edged Drew, 25-35, while Saint Elizabeth was third with 72 points.
Drew picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it races at the Intercollegiate Border Battle, hosted by Rowan University.
