NEWARK, N.J. - Junior
Aubrey Johnson placed 32nd among 235 runners to lead the Drew University cross country teams to a strong showing at the NJIT Highlander Challenge on Saturday at Branch Brook Park.
In a meet that included Division I, II, and III competition, the Ranger women placed 10th among 28 teams while taking fourth among Division III schools.
All nine Rangers who raced on Saturday recorded a collegiate-best time.
Johnson continued her outstanding season and covered the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 56 seconds. After breaking the 21-minute mark for the first time earlier this fall, she achieved a new milestone and eclipsed the 20-minute plateau for the first time in her career. Johnson placed 10th among Division III harriers.
Drew's second finisher was junior
Virginia Gaylord, who came in 53rd with a time of 20:44. Junior
Carly Orent took 73rd in 21:26 while classmate
Samantha Villanueva came in 115th in 22:59. Junior
Marina Murillo rounded out the team scoring, finishing 144th in 24:10.
Also competing for the women's team were junior
Charlotte Principal (148th, 24:16), junior
Tabitha Lopes (152nd, 24:33), and senior
Marissa Berrios (164th, 25:09).
Freshman
Shawn Corcoran was the only member of Drew's men's team to race, and he finished 102nd with a time of 30:02 in his first collegiate 8,000-meter race.
The Rangers continue their season in two weeks, when they race at the Inter-Regional Border Battle in Gloucester County Dream Park in Glassboro, N.J. on Oct. 16.
