MADISON, N.J. - The Drew University women's volleyball team opened varsity play in style, blanking Bard College 3-0 in its inaugural match Wednesday evening in front of a spirited crowd in Baldwin Gym.
The Rangers led for nearly the entire match and won by scores of 25-14, 24-19, and 25-17.
Freshman
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro led Drew with 16 kills on 30 attempts for a .333 hitting night. She also contributed eight digs and a pair of blocks (one solo).
Sophomore
Melina Christodoulou also had a big match offensively and hit an impressive .615, totaling 10 kills on just 13 attempts.
Freshman libero
Lauren Gaza added 19 digs while freshman setters
Shelby Weeden and
Jasmine Butler notched 15 and 14 digs, respectively. Freshman
Kiara Vasquez led all players with three aces.
Christodoulou bookended the match with the first and last kills of the night. She finished off a set from Weeden for the first kill in team history to make it 3-3 in the first set, and she clinched the match off an assist from Butler.
The Rangers pulled away late in all three sets. In the first game, Drew closed on a 10-1 run, with Camacho-Tenreiro firing up four kills during the spurt. The Rangers ended the second set on a 5-0 surge, then closed out their historic night by finishing on a 5-1 outburst.
Drew posted a .292 hitting percentage for the night while holding the Raptors to .011 hitting.
The Rangers play their first-ever road matches on Saturday with a tri-match at Penn State Harrisburg. Drew takes on Clarks Summit at 2 p.m. before playing Harrisburg at 4 p.m.
