FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Drew University cross country teams opened their 2021 seasons with numerous impressive performances on Friday at the Adelphi Panther Invitational, held at Bethpage State Park.
The Rangers were competing for the first time under new Head Coach
Sean Robinson.
The women's team placed seventh in the field of 14 teams but finished second among Division III squads.
Leading the way for the Rangers was junior
Aubrey Johnson, who placed 17th out of 129 runners but was the second Division III finisher. She traversed the 5,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 10 seconds - a personal-best for cross country 5K.
Making her Ranger debut, junior
Virginia Gaylord was Drew's second finisher, taking 31st in 21:47.
Rounding out the team scoring for the Rangers were juniors
Carly Orent (63rd in 23:29),
Samantha Villanueva (98th in 27:08), and
Marina Murillo (99th in 27:18).
Also competing for the women's squad were juniors
Tabitha Lopes (103rd in 27:49),
Charlotte Principal (104th in 27:57), and
Marissa Berrios (110th in 29:19).
On the men's side, two Rangers made their collegiate debuts. Freshman
Evan Pratts placed 88th among 144 competitors, clocking a time of 31:59 for the 8,000-meter course, while classmate
Shawn Corcoran took 97th in 32:28.
Both teams return to action on Sept. 11, when they run at the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen Invitational at Union Canal Tunnel Park in Lebanon, Pa.
