NEW YORK and POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Drew University men's fencing team posted some solid showings as a split squad on Sunday.
The "A" team finished 3-2 at a MACFA A vs. B event at Hunter College while a "B" squad went 6-1 to finish as the runner-up at the Matt Lampell Invitational at Vassar College, placing the team's overall record at 20-10 for the season.
At Hunter, the Rangers opened with consecutive victories over Hunter (24-3), Yeshiva (27-0) and Army (22-5) before running into some tough competition, falling to NJIT (19-8) and Stevens (17-10).
At Vassar, Drew defeated Binghamton (19-8) and Cornell (21-6) before suffering its lone defeat of the day, a 19-8 setback to Vassar. The Rangers closed with four straight wins, topping RPI (15-12), Marist (25-2), RIT (19-8), and Army (27-0).
The foil unit enjoyed a big day at Hunter, finishing 4-1 while posting a 36-9 record. Its lone blemish was a narrow 5-4 setback to Stevens. Leading the way was sophomore
Aidan DeSola, who posted an 11-1 record and a 3-0 output versus Stevens.
Sophomore
Tristan Santulli was a perfect 9-0 in foil while freshman
Henri Degremont went 9-3. In addition, sophomore
Charles Daum finished 7-5.
Both the sabre and epee teams went 3-2 on the day. Juniors
Aiden Holmes (11-4) and
Michael Parkhurst (10-2) led sabre, with Holmes improving to 45-11 on the season and Parkhurst upping his record to 41-16. In addition, junior
Daniel Magda was 7-8.
Epee was fronted by sophomore
AJ Marchant, who assembled a 9-6 record, while juniors
Lucas Alfaiate and
Lorence Lukanyuk each finished 7-5. Junior
Julio Arias contributed a 4-2 mark for the day.
At Vassar, the foil unit turned in a dominant performance, going 6-1 while racking up a 53-10 mark. Leading the way individually was senior
Drew Laun, who finished 10-1. Sophomore
Aidan Montalbine was a perfect 9-0 while freshman
Noah Gardos went 9-2. Others who contributed stellar showings included freshman
Michael Niechwadowicz (8-1), junior
Brandon Mundahl (7-2), and junior
Morgan Mundahl (7-2).
Both the epee and foil teams were 5-2 at Vassar. In epee, junior
Will Nop (7-1), senior
Hunter Rodell (7-3), and freshman
William Morton (7-4) posted the most victories on the day. In foil, freshman
Charles Amodemo and junior
Ethan Trent each finished 6-5.
Drew is now off from competition until Jan. 21, when it travels to Boston College for a Northeast Fencing Conference event.
