MADISON, N.J. – Junior foilist
Michael DeSando reached the career 100-win plateau while helping to lead the Drew University men's fencing team to a 4-2 showing at the Drew Fall Invitational Part II on Sunday at the Simon Forum.
The Rangers, ranked No. 6 in Division III, defeated Pitt (15-12), Denison (22-5), Lafayette (18-9), and LIU (17-10) while falling to Rutgers (15-12) and Stevens (15-12). Drew is now 7-4 on the season.
DeSando is now 104-55 for his career, good for a stellar 65.4 winning percentage. He finished 7-2 on the day, leading the foil squad to a 5-1 showing, including a 5-4 victory over Stevens.
Twelve different foilists saw action for the Rangers. Sophomore
Charles Daum added a 5-2 showing while freshman
Noah Gardos (4-3) and sophomore
Tristan Santulli (4-4) each picked up four wins. Posting three victories apiece were freshman
Henri Degremont (3-0), junior
Brandon Mundahl (3-0), junior
Morgan Mundahl (3-0), and senior
Drew Laun (3-4). DeSando led the way in the victory over Stevens, going 2-1, while Degremont (1-0), Daum (1-0), and Santulli (1-2) earned one win each.
The epee team was also impressive, finishing 4-2 on the day. Leading Drew individually was junior
Lucas Alfaiate, who went 7-2 overall and 2-1 versus the Ducks. A dozen Rangers were also on the strip in epee, including junior
Julio Arias, who finished 5-4. Freshman
William Morton was a perfect 4-0 while sophomore
Danny Stevens (4-5) also collected four victories.
The sabre squad finished 3-3 and was led by junior
Michael Parkhurst, who went 9-4, and sophomore
Aiden Holmes, who posted an 8-2 mark and was 2-1 against Stevens.
The Rangers return to action next Sunday, when they travel to the Vassar College Invitational.
