Men's Fencing Posts Strong Showing at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE - Competing for the first time since Nov. 21, the Drew University men's fencing team shook off any rust and registered a solid 6-3 showing at MACFA Groups A Versus C meet on Sunday at Johns Hopkins University.

With the wins, Drew improved to 47-12 on the season.

Senior epee Topher Infinito and junior sabrist Zack Wolin each reached a milestone for the Rangers by eclipsing the 100-win plateau for their careers.

The Rangers, ranked sixth in the most recent US Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) Division III poll, sent two different teams to the event. The "A" team finished 3-1 on the day, earning victories over Haverford (15-12), Navy (22-5), and William & Mary (25-2). Its lone blemish was a 16-11 setback to Johns Hopkins, ranked second in the USFCA Division III poll. Drew's "B" squad defeated Cornell (21-6), Lafayette (15-12), and Rowan (23-4) and lost a pair of narrow decisions to Johns Hopkins (15-12) and Rutgers (16-11).

Paced by freshman AJ Marchant, Drew's epee unit led the way, finishing 8-1 for the afternoon. Marchant turned in an outstanding showing, compiling a 14-1 mark. Sophomore Will Nop and junior Hunter Rodell each went 11-4 on the day while sophomore Julio Arias and junior Nicholas Beach each finished 7-3. Infinito added a 7-5 showing while freshman Daniel Stevens was 5-3.

The foil squad registered five victories and was led by junior Michael DeSando, who posted a stellar 13-2 mark. Senior William Badrigian and sophomore Charles Daum each went 8-3 while sophomore Morgan Mundahl was 4-2. Senior Drew Laun finished 6-6 while freshman Aidan DeSola (5-6) was also in action.

The Rangers also picked up four victories in sabre. Freshman Aiden Holmes and Wolin each finished 9-6 to lead the way while sophomores Daniel Magda and Ethan Trent both went 6-5. Senior Jake KurtzFreilich added a 5-5 mark while sophomore Michael Parkhurst (6-9) and junior Alex Goebel (1-0) were also in action.

Drew will now compete at home in each of its next three outings, starting on Sunday when it hosts the MACFA "A" Round Robin starting at 9 a.m. in the Simon Forum.
