The Drew University women's volleyball team will head into the 2022 campaign with high hopes after a tremendous inaugural year last fall.
Under Head Coach
Alyssa Broccoli, the 2021 Landmark Conference Coach of the Year, the Rangers put together a 19-9 record and won a pair of conference matches in their debut season. Featuring a roster that consisted of 12 freshmen, one sophomore, and one senior, the Rangers also played two Landmark opponents to five sets. Broccoli led the Rangers to a stellar 11-3 mark on their home hardwood of Baldwin Gym, and Drew swept its opponent 3-0 on 11 occasions.
The squad will be led by sophomore outside hitter
Andrea Camacho-Tenreiro, who is coming off a stellar rookie season. A First-Team All-Landmark Conference selection, she led the conference and finished fourth in Division III in kills per set (4.51) a year ago. A two-time Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week, she also finished second on the squad in both digs per set (3.58) and service aces per set (0.45). In perhaps her top performance of the year, she racked up season-highs of 32 kills and 27 digs versus Catholic.
Sophomore outside hitter
Ashley Carkhuff returns as the team's second-leading hitter after posting 2.34 kills per set a year ago while also contributing 2.66 digs per set - a mark that ranked third among the Rangers. Additionally, sophomore OH
Liberty Jackson is back after finishing fourth on the team in kills (1.42 kps) last season.
Classmates
Jasmine Butler and
Shelby Weeden also return after sharing time at setter, averaging 5.19 and 4.32 assists per set, respectively.
Defensively, sophomore libero
Lauren Gaza returns after posting a team-leading 5.03 digs per set while classmate and fellow libero
Kiara Vasquez is also back. Vasquez led the Rangers with 0.60 aces per set while adding 2.65 digs per game.
Junior middle blocker
Melina Christodoulou returns after leading the squad with 0.66 blocks per set and placing third on the team with 1.84 kills per game in 2021. Sophomore defensive specialist
Genevieve Sarinelli will provide an additional option while sophomore middle blocker
Alyssa Baron will look to make her mark after missing last season with an injury.
Six newcomers will also vie for playing time in freshmen
Teeya Desgoutte (opposite),
Marissa Guajardo (middle blocker),
Abigail Pereira (opposite),
Emily Shirk (outside hitter/defensive specialist),
and
Inaya Stanford (outside hitter), and junior transfer
Leila Ksiyer (middle blocker/outside hitter).
The Rangers open their season next Friday, when they take on Bridgewater (Va.) and Salisbury on the opening day of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic. Drew's home opener is set for Sept. 8 versus Farmingdale State, and the team's Landmark Conference opener will take place Oct. 1 at Catholic.
