NEWARK, N.J. – Junior
Kate Rice placed second out of 219 runners to lead the Drew University women's cross country team to a fifth-place finish among 31 teams at the NJIT Highlander XC Challenge on Saturday at Branch Brook Park.
Rice was timed at 18 minutes, 25 seconds for the 5,000-meter course while finishing just eight seconds behind race winner Lindsay Cook of Army. In addition, she improved upon her own school record for the fastest cross country 5K, slicing 16 seconds off her mark set at the Lebanon Valley Invitational back on Sept. 7 of this season.
Rice helped lead the Rangers to the top finish among Division III schools. Army won the meet and was followed by Delaware, Molloy, and Seton Hall.
Finishing second for the Rangers was sophomore
Sarah Hattan, who placed 33rd in 20:11. Freshman
April Kusnier was close behind, coming in 38th in 20:20, while classmate
Isabella Fortunato placed 60th in 21:25. First-year
Deborah Wang completed the team scoring, finishing 79th in 22:16.
Also competing were sophomore
Ariana Vira, who took 82nd in 22:26, and freshman
Bella Polizzi, who finished 97th in 23:13.
The Rangers continue their season next Saturday, when they compete at the Inter-Regional Border Battle, hosted by Rowan University at Gloucester Country Dream Park in Logan Township, N.J.
