BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior
Kate Rice finished 96th in a large and talented field of 387 runners while competing in the "White" race to lead the Drew University women's cross country team at the 50th Paul Short Run at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus.
The Rangers, ranked ninth in the most recent United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Metro Region poll, were taking on some of the best teams in all of Division III. In fact, five teams that finished among the top-10 at last year's NCAA Division III Championships were in the field, including the national runner-up, NYU.
Rice was timed at 22 minutes, 54 seconds for the 6,000-meter course, taking six seconds off her previous season-best time. In the process, she became just the second runner in team history to break 23 minutes for 6K, joining Jennifer Van Wingerden C'13, who did it six times in 2012.
Sophomore
Sarah Hattan was Drew's second finisher, placing 308th in 25:12 – just nine seconds shy of her collegiate-best. She was followed by freshman
April Kusnier, who placed 335th in 25:45, senior
Caitlin Mulvey, who took 339th in 25:59, and freshman
Isabella Fortunato, who rounded out the team scoring by taking 379th in 28:01.
Finishing as displacers were freshman
Bella Polizzi, who was 383rd in 28:28, and sophomore
Ariana Vira, who came in 385th in 29:20.
The Rangers continue their season on Oct. 19, when they compete at the Rowan University Inter-Regional Border Battle.
