NEW YORK – The Drew University men's swimming & diving team faced some stellar competition at the NYU Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Rangers took on NYU, which finished fourth at last year's NCAA Division III Championships, as well as Stevens Institute of Technology, last year's Middle Atlantic Conference champion.
Leading the way for the Rangers was sophomore
Nicholas Heinio-Widell, who turned in a third-place finish among 25 swimmers in the 100-freestyle, clocking a time of 47 seconds flat. He was also fifth in a field of 20 in the 50-freestyle (21.64) and seven among 19 swimmers in the 100-butterfly (52.05).
Additionally, sophomore
Liam Gregory placed sixth out of 19 competitors in the 500-freestyle (4:52.38) and sixth in a field of 15 in the 200-freestyle (1:49.96). Meanwhile, junior
Brendan Burkett took seventh in the 50-free (21.85) and 10th in the 100-free (48.25).
Several additional Rangers placed in the top half of their events, including sophomore
Kyle Talerico, who came in ninth in the 100-fly (52.62) and was sixth in a field 12 in the 200-fly (1:58.52). Freshman
Thiago Silva came in eighth in the 50-free, and senior
Yan Zheng Lew finished eighth in the 500-free (4:53.69) and fourth out of eight swimmers in the 1,650-free (16:56.64). Freshman
Hunor Harsanyi added a fifth-place finish out of 13 competitors in the 200-breaststroke (2:10.98) and was fourth among nine swimmers in the 100-breaststroke (59.67).
The Rangers continue their season on Nov. 16, when they compete against Susquehanna University in their home opener starting at 1 p.m.
