Men’s Swimming & Diving Wins Two Events on Second Day of LC Champs

BALTIMORE – The Drew University men's swimming & diving team won a pair of events on the second day of the Landmark Conference Championships on Friday at Loyola University's Mangione Aquatic Center.
 
In the team standings, the Rangers currently find themselves in third place, having scored 255 points thus far. Catholic leads the way with 374.5 points and is followed by Scranton (282), Drew, Susquehanna (120.5), Wilkes (88), Elizabethtown (78), Juniata (75), Lycoming (58), Moravian (44), and Goucher (32).
 
In the 50-freestyle, a rare tie for the title was awarded to a pair of Rangers, as seniors Brendan Burkett and Nicholas Heinio-Widell both touched in 20.81 seconds.
 
The Rangers closed Friday night's finals session with a victory in the 400-medley relay, the squad's third gold medal in as many relays to start the meet. Burkett, senior Gabe Spivak, junior Kyle Talerico, and sophomore Thiago Silva were clocked at 3:22.46 – just 0.16 seconds shy of the Landmark Conference and meet record and just seven-hundredths of a second shy of the school record.
 
Five additional athletes reached the championship final for the Rangers. Freshman Marcell Hudak placed fourth in the 500-freestyle (4:43.97) while sophomore Hunor Harsanyi placed fifth in the 200-IM (1:57.76). Silva took fifth in the 50-freestyle (21.28 seconds) while junior Christopher Guidi (500-free, 4:45.73) and Talerico (200-IM, 1:59.45) each came in sixth.
 
Six Rangers earned additional points in the consolation finals, including junior Liam Gregory, who placed ninth in the 500-free (4:44.72). Finishing 10th were sophomore Issac Jeffers in the 500 (4:53.13) and Spivak in the 200-IM (1:58.88) while freshman Nate Osborne came in 14th in the 500 (5:02.02). Senior Ricky Kilichowski added a 15th-place finish in the 200-IM (2:03.36), and sophomore Will Spreeman was 16th in the 500 (5:04.56).
 
The championship continues on Saturday, with prelims starting at 10 a.m. and finals taking place at 5:30 p.m.
