POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Freshman
Lupo Sala went 12-0 in his Ranger debut and the Drew University men's fencing team finished 4-1 at the Matt Lampell Invitational, hosted by Vassar College, on Sunday.
The Rangers opened the day with four straight victories, downing Swarthmore (26-1), RIT (18-9), Rochester (18-9), and Army (19-8) before dropping a 16-11 decision to Vassar.
Sala led the epee unit to a 5-0 showing on the day, with the squad putting together a stellar individual record of 36-9. He went 3-0 in each of his four matches versus Swarthmore, Rochester, RIT, and Vassar.
Junior
William Morton added a 7-5 showing in epee while senior
Danny Stevens went 6-3. In addition, freshmen
JP Emmert, freshman
Jackson Howard, and
Nicholas Machado each finished 3-0 while junior
Gabriel Leone was 2-1.
The foil team nearly went 5-0 as well, as their only blemish was a narrow 5-4 loss to Vassar. The group also finished 36-9 individually, with freshman
Andrew Klyczek leading the way with a 12-3 mark. Classmate
Paul Greenleaf was a perfect 7-0 while senior
Aidan Montalbine went 7-2. Senior
Tristan Santulli assembled a 5-3 record on the day while junior
Henri Degremont was 3-0. Freshman
Jason Sobon contributed a 2-1 mark.
The Rangers finished 2-3 in sabre, with freshman
Jason Ahlman leading the way with a 7-6 record. Sophomore
Logan Kleva added a 5-5 showing.
Drew continues its season next Sunday, when it travels to Johns Hopkins University for a MACFA A versus C event.
