Season Preview: Women's Fencing

10/24/2025 4:57:00 PM

The Drew University women's fencing team will return a strong core of returning athletes in 2025-26 under fourth-year Head Coach Joseph Zanko III.

Eleven returners are back this season to lead the Rangers, who are coming off a season in which they finished fourth at the NIWFA Championships and seventh at the EWFC Championships.

Six Rangers who competed at last year's NCAA Regional Championships will return this season, including three in foil – sophomore Filiz Erdogan, senior Bella Hatzoglu, and sophomore Tala Varoqua.

Erdogan is coming a tremendous debut season for the Rangers in which she was honored as the United States Fencing Coaches Association Division III Foil Newcomer of the Year. She posted a 74-42 record to lead the Rangers across all weapons in victories and was one of the team's top performers at the NCAA Regional Championships, where she reached the second round and finished 29th overall. In addition, she earned Second Team All-NIWFA honors by virtue of her sixth-place finish at the NIWFA Championships.

Hatzoglu returns as one of the most experienced Rangers and is coming off a season in which she posted a 56-48 mark. She is a two-time NCAA regional qualifier who also captured First Team All-EWFC honors during her freshman season.

Varoqua is coming off a first-year campaign in which she posted 19 victories while junior Morgan Mildner posted 18 wins during her rookie season in 2023-24. Junior Alexa Gavenas and sophomore Isabella Mosquera also return in foil.

Drew's sabre unit brings back two regional qualifiers from a year ago in sophomore Jay Cusson and senior Eva Esqueda. Cusson posted a 36-38 record last year while Esqueda, a two-time regional qualifier, notched a 20-20 mark. Freshmen Faten Elmashni, Sabrina Holmes, and Ava Insinga will also compete for the Rangers' sabre team this year.

In epee, senior Izzy Anderson returns as a regional qualifier and assembled a 36-26 record last season. Sophomore Alisha Bourhill-Tumser is also back after posting 21 wins in the same weapon a year ago. In addition, freshmen Jessey Rejano and Emily Varhaul will join the epee squad this season.

The Rangers open their season at Temple University's Nikki Franke Classic on Oct. 25 before hosting the Drew University on Nov. 2. Drew will travel to Vassar College for the EWFC Championships on Feb. 15 before hosting the NIWFA Championships on Feb. 28. The NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Championships will be held on March 7 at a site to be determined.
